Superman, Prince Charming, and Jesus
Christian women are told they should model the Proverbs 31 Woman and it’s nice that we have an entire chapter dedicated to guiding us in the direction of the kind of women we are supposed to be, but where’s the chapter telling us what kind of man we are supposed to marry or for that matter telling men what kind of man they should be? There isn’t one. In fact, there are many.
Little girls believe they’re princesses and that one day Prince Charming will come and whisk them off their feet. That’s true to some degree because Jesus is our Prince Charming (and Prince of Peace) and the church is His bride. Our Father is the King of heaven and being His children that in turn makes us royalty.
Little boys run around the yard with a sheet tucked into their collar that trails behind them in the breeze of their run. Today they are Superman. Jesus is the real superhero though. He died on the cross and saved us from eternal damnation.
Our culture’s obsession with Superman and Prince Charming is derived from our innate desire as His creation to be like Christ and have a relationship with Him.
The entire Bible is full of examples for how Jesus lived and the kind of God we were made to worship. As believers we should strive to be like Christ. After all, how can we call ourselves Christians if we aren’t living up to our name meaning “Christ-like”?
Where a woman’s role model is the Proverbs 31 woman (among women like Ruth and Esther…), a man’s role model is Jesus himself.
By spending time in the word and applying it to our lives we not only become more Christ-like but we learn how to see Christ in other people.
If you can’t see Christ in your person of interest then pray for that person daily without ceasing and if you aren’t already joined in marriage, let God bring someone into your life who is following in His footsteps instead of the world’s.
I’ve come up with a list of some of Christ’s wonderful qualities and attributes that women should look for in a man and that men should adapt into their lives.
Not only does He think about you, but He has plans for your future – a future with Him.
“‘For I know the plans I have for you,’ declares the Lord, ‘plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.'” – Jeremiah 29:11
You have nothing to fear or worry about because He will never leave you.
“Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or terrified because of them, for the Lord your God goes with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you.” – Deuteronomy 31:6
“Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.” – Joshua 1:9
He will fight for you.
“The Lord will fight for you; you need only be still.” – Exodus 14:14
He is your safe place.
“Truly he is my rock and my salvation;
he is my fortress, I will not be shaken.
My salvation and my honor depend on God;
he is my mighty rock, my refuge.
Trust in him at all times, you people;
pour out your hearts to him,
for God is our refuge.” – Psalm 62: 6-8
He is good.
“You are good, and what you do is good; teach me your decrees.” – Psalm 119:68
You are the apple of His eye and His treasured possession.
“Keep me as the apple of your eye; hide me in the shadow of your wings.” – Psalm 17:8
“For you are a people holy to the LORD your God. The LORD your God has chosen you out of all the peoples on the face of the earth to be his people, his treasured possession.” – Deuteronomy 7:6
He will tell you the truth.
“This truth gives them confidence that they have eternal life, which God–who does not lie–promised them before the world began.” – Titus 1:2
He will keep His promises and is faithful.
“God will make this happen, for he who calls you is faithful.” – 1 Thessalonians 5:24
He is patient.
“ And he passed in front of Moses, proclaiming, “The Lord, the Lord, the compassionate and gracious God, slow to anger,abounding in love and faithfulness,” – Exodus 34:6
He loves you.
“God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.” – John 3:16
He knows your needs and will provide for you.
“Therefore do not be anxious, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ For the Gentiles seek after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them all.” – Matthew 6:31-32
He is compassionate.
“The Lord is compassionate and gracious,
slow to anger, abounding in love.” – Psalm 103:8
He will listen to you.
“Then he continued, ‘Do not be afraid, Daniel. Since the first day that you set your mind to gain understanding and to humble yourself before your God, your words were heard, and I have come in response to them.'” – Daniel 10:12
He will pursue you.
“So He told them this parable, saying, ‘What man among you, if he has a hundred sheep and has lost one of them, does not leave the ninety-nine in the open pasture and go after the one which is lost until he finds it?’ When he has found it, he lays it on his shoulders, rejoicing. And when he comes home, he calls together his friends and his neighbors, saying to them, ‘Rejoice with me, for I have found my sheep which was lost!’ I tell you that in the same way, there will be more joy in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous persons who need no repentance.” – Luke 15:3-7
Where God is perfect and He will never let us down, everyone else who is human will. We must seek our joy in Him because if we put it in earthly things – including relationships – we will never truly be satisfied. We can try our hardest to look and act like Christ, but we will never reach His perfection. It’s a daily struggle, but God looks at our hearts.
”And so we know and rely on the love God has for us. God is love. Whoever lives in love lives in God, and God in them.” – 1 John 4:16
It’s alright for boys to grow up into men who are superheroes as long as the superhero they are trying to be like is Jesus. It’s completely fine for girls to grow up into women who still believe they’re princesses and that Prince Charming is right around the corner because guess what?
